Joycelyn Stevenson represents clients in litigation and dispute resolution matters, primarily involving labor and employment litigation, health care litigation and business litigation.
In addition to representing clients in general commercial litigation matters, Joycelyn focuses a substantial part of her practice in the area of labor and employment law. Her experience includes representing the firm's corporate clients on issues dealing with race, sex and age discrimination and labor relations, as well as lawsuits brought pursuant to the ADEA, ADA, Title VII, FMLA and FLSA. She regularly advises clients on daily workplace issues involving equal employment opportunity and leave laws, and garnishment and wage payment issues and also prepares responses to charges of discrimination filed with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and state human rights commissions. In addition, Joycelyn frequently reviews and drafts employee handbooks and settlement agreements and has experience representing employers in injunction actions involving noncompete agreements.
Joycelyn's health care litigation experience includes defending hospitals, physician practices and health care or related institutions in general litigation matters, as well as matters involving employment litigation. She has represented the interests of hospitals and health care facilities in investigations conducted by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and various state human rights' agencies, and provides counsel on day-to-day personnel issues, including hiring and termination of employees, leave, vacation and overtime pay.
In addition to her law practice at Boult Cummings, Joycelyn is actively involved in the Lawyers Association for Women and has served as Secretary and as Co-chairperson of the Minority Outreach Committee. She currently is on the Board of Directors and Treasurer of the Council on Aging of Greater Nashville. She is a member of the Nashville Bar Association where she has previously served as chairperson of the Minority High School Summer Intern Program. In addition, Joycelyn is a member of the Tennessee Bar Association, the American Bar Association, the Napier Looby Bar Association, and the Napier Looby Bar Foundation where she has served as a Board Member. Joycelyn also serves as an Associate member of the Harry Phillips American Inn of Court.
Joycelyn earned her law degree in May 2001 from Vanderbilt University where she served on the Moot Court Board and as Notes Editor of the Vanderbilt Journal of Entertainment Law and Practice . While in law school she authored, "Changes in the Ticket Distribution Industry: Is This the Beginning of the End for Ticketmaster," 3 VAND. J. ENT. L. & PRAC. 53 (2001). Joycelyn also received the Cortner Award after winning first place in the 1999-2000 Vanderbilt Intramural Moot Court Competition.
